Each poster comes with a letter home. Ella writes about the place, its hidden history, and the detail that never makes it into the guidebooks.
Germany's highest peak has the German-Austrian border running right across its summit, and for decades that meant a genuine passport check at the top of a mountain, right up until the Schengen Agreement scrapped it in 1995. It also triggered one of the odder rivalries in alpine engineering: the Austrians built a cable car to their side of the summit first, so a few years later German engineers drilled straight through the mountain and laid a cogwheel railway to the glacier just below their own terrace. Two separate summit platforms, Bavarian and Tyrolean, joined by a narrow walkway that used to be a border post.
This poster is an original illustration in watercolour and ink, painted by Ella for the Ella's Adventures travel poster series.
