The bridge is painted green on purpose, matching the leather benches of the House of Commons on the nearest side of Parliament. Head downstream to Lambeth Bridge and you'll find it painted red instead, matching the House of Lords benches on that side of the building. Nobody crossing either bridge tends to notice they've been colour coded to the two houses of Parliament sitting right beside them, quietly, since 1970.
