The most striking Venetian mask, the bauta, with its sharp jawline jutting forward far enough to let the wearer eat, drink and talk without ever showing their face, wasn't really a costume at all. Worn with a black cloak and tricorn hat, it was legally required civic dress, mandated so citizens could vote and take part in political life anonymously, on equal footing regardless of rank. That same anonymity made it the uniform of choice at the Ridotto, Venice's famous gambling house, where nobles could lose fortunes at the card table without their own families recognising them across the room.
