Each poster comes with a letter home. Ella writes about the place, its hidden history, and the funny details that never makes it into the guidebooks.
When the 1755 earthquake and the tsunami that followed flattened most of Lisbon, the hillside district of Alfama was spared, its solid rock foundations and higher ground took the worst of the shaking without the flooding that hit lower down. So Alfama never got rebuilt on a grid the way the rest of the city did, and its medieval streets stayed exactly as narrow and crooked as they always were. Narrow enough, in fact, that only the old 1930s Remodelado trams can still fit through them. Modern trams simply don't fit down streets that never had reason to widen.
This poster is an original exclusive illustration in watercolour and ink, exclusively painted for the Ella's Adventures travel poster series.
