That whole dramatic curve of cliff and sea everyone comes to photograph isn't a coastline, it's a scar. Around 1600 BC, one of the largest volcanic eruptions in ten thousand years blew the centre out of this island and left the caldera behind. Down at Akrotiri, the Bronze Age town buried in the ash, archaeologists have never found a single body. Tremors gave people enough warning to leave, and clear enough streets show some of them even came back for their belongings before the end came.
