Each poster comes with a letter home. Ella writes about the place and its hidden history, and the details that never makes it into the guidebooks.
Powderham Castle has belonged to the same family, the Courtenays, for over 600 years, since building began on the Exe estuary in 1391. In 1794, the flamboyant 3rd Viscount Courtenay decided his coming-of-age deserved an entire new room. He commissioned the architect James Wyatt to design the Music Room specifically for the occasion, its walls washed in the same eye-catching blue as the grand Staircase Hall next door. Two years and one exceptional birthday party later, it's still considered one of the finest Georgian interiors in the West Country, all built to mark a single twenty-first birthday.
This poster is an original illustration in watercolour and ink, painted exclusively for the Ella's Adventures travel poster series.
