Look past the boardwalks and the turquoise pools and think of the waterfalls as living things. At Plitviče the barriers between the lakes are built by moss and lime, growing about a centimetre a year, and around 400 years ago one of them rose so high it drowned a 40 metre waterfall that still stands silent under Lake Kozjak.
