Each poster comes with a letter home. Ella writes about the place, its hidden history, and the detail that never makes it into the guidebooks.
Oktoberfest didn't start as a beer festival at all. In October 1810, Munich threw a five day public celebration for the wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig, and the whole thing ended with a horse race on a meadow just outside the city gates. The crowd enjoyed it so much they came back the next year to do it again, and the meadow is still called Theresienwiese today, named after the bride. There wasn't a single beer tent at that first one. The beer came later. The horse race came first, and the wedding it celebrated is the reason the festival exists at all.
This poster is an original illustration in watercolour and ink, painted by Ella for the Ella's Adventures travel poster series.
