The Nazca Lines were made between 500 BCE and 500 CE by a culture that removed reddish-brown desert pebbles to reveal the paler soil underneath, drawing over 800 straight lines, 300 geometric shapes and 70 animal and plant figures across the desert floor. They stayed completely unknown to the wider world until the 1930s, when commercial pilots flying over the region were the first people in two thousand years to actually see what had been drawn there. Nobody has settled why they were made, theories range from water rituals to astronomy, and the people who made them left almost nothing else behind to explain it.
