Everyone visits for the turquoise domes and the great square glowing in the evening light, but the detail worth hunting for is four plain marble posts standing at either end. They are goalposts. Shah Abbas laid this square out in the early 1600s as a polo ground and set them there himself, and four hundred years on they are still in place, the oldest polo goalposts in the world, mostly walked straight past. Send this A6 art postcard to mark Naqsh-e Jahan Square, Isfahan.
