Each poster comes with a letter home. Ella writes about the place and its hidden history, and the details that never makes it into the guidebooks.
In 1291, Venice ordered every glass furnace moved out to the island of Murano, officially to stop the wooden city burning down. A stricter law followed in 1295, banning the glassmakers themselves from ever leaving, and the real reason became obvious: it was never about fire, it was about keeping the recipes secret. A glassmaker caught fleeing the island could face life expulsion from the guild, years chained to a galley oar, or worse. And yet within that gilded cage they were treated as nobility, permitted to wear swords, immune from prosecution, their daughters free to marry into Venice's most patrician families.
This poster is an original illustration in watercolour and ink, painted exclusively for the Ella's Adventures travel poster series.
