Every morning near the Tambopata Research Center, hundreds of macaws and parrots of up to fifteen species gather at the world's largest known clay lick to eat the exposed riverbank soil. Many of the fruits and seeds that make up their diet contain natural plant toxins, and scientists believe the clay binds to these toxins and neutralises them, though ongoing research suggests the birds may simply be after the sodium too. Nobody has fully settled the answer. What's certain is that this stretch of riverbank hosts the highest concentration of macaw clay licks anywhere on earth.
