Those perfect pastel domes are a good deal newer than they look. The almond biscuit itself is centuries old, but the sandwich version everyone pictures, two shells with a filling of ganache or buttercream, only arrived in the 1920s at the Paris patisserie Ladurée. Its humbler chapter belongs to two Carmelite nuns turned out of their convent in Nancy during the French Revolution, who baked and sold plain macarons simply to survive and are still remembered there as Les Sœurs Macarons, the Macaron Sisters.

This 12oz ceramic latte mug carries the watercolour stack of macarons, printed on both sides and made for slow mornings, afternoon coffee, and anyone who likes a little patisserie with their brew. Dishwasher and microwave safe.
