Every year on the 8th of May, the town of Helston in Cornwall closes its streets, puts on its finest, and dances. The same dance, on the same date, to the same tune that has never once been written down. The origin story involves a dragon!

This letter is part of the Letters Home: On This Day collection. Written in the voice of a real traveller named Ella, she visits Helston on the anniversary of Flora Day, weaving together the history of the Furry Dance, the Hal-an-Tow pageant, and the ancient legend of the town that celebrated its own survival by dancing through each other's houses.

Printed and posted as a physical letter, it makes a genuinely personal gift for anyone with a connection to the 8th of May: a birthday, an anniversary, or simply a deep and abiding love of Cornwall and its more gloriously eccentric traditions.

This letter is printed and posted to you as a letter should be. Part of the Letters Home
