Each poster comes with a letter home and Ella writes about the place, its hidden history, and the detail that never makes it into the guidebooks.
The Koutoubia takes its name from the Arabic for booksellers, because a hundred book vendors once traded in the streets at its base. Its minaret was supposedly crowned with three golden spheres, though nobody agrees on whether they were ever really gold, or whether that's just another story told in the souks. What's certain is that the spheres are still filled with mineral salt from the High Atlas Mountains, swapped out once a year during Ramadan, to keep them from ever losing their shine.
This poster is an original illustration in watercolour and ink, painted by Ella for the Ella's Adventures travel poster series.
