Every boat that has crossed the Königssee since 1909 has run on electric power, and it isn't for the reason most visitors assume. Prince Regent Luitpold of Bavaria kept a hunting lodge on the lake, and the noisy petrol boats of the day kept disturbing his shoot, so he simply had them replaced. Over a century later, tourists gliding across the water toward St Bartholomew's chapel are still riding the quiet legacy of one irritated prince. The captains still stop mid-lake and play a trumpet toward the cliffs, purely so passengers can hear the famous echo bounce back.
