Kents Cavern, a limestone cave system on the edge of Torquay, holds some of the oldest human remains ever found in Britain, a jawbone fragment now dated to around 41,000 years old. Layer upon layer of the cave floor recorded tens of thousands of years of continuous habitation, by early humans and, long before them, by hyenas, bears and other Ice Age animals whose bones turned up alongside the earliest tools ever found in the country.
