HMS Beagle

On the 11th May 1820, HMS Beagle was launched at Woolwich. It was a modest survey ship built for £7,803 that would eventually carry Charles Darwin around the world and change how we understand life on Earth. He nearly did not get on board because the captain did not like the shape of his nose.
This A6 art postcard reimagines a postcard sent home from that moment: a unique watercolour and ink illustration, vintage postmarked 11th May 1820, capturing the Beagle on the Thames at Woolwich on the day of her launch, before anyone knew what she would become.
Part of the Postcards Home series; a growing collection of original illustrated postcards, each rooted in a real place and a real moment in history, with a classic postcard reverse printed in black, ready to write and send.
