Each poster comes with a letter home. Ella writes about the place and its hidden history, and the details that never makes it into the guidebooks.
That harp on the glass is older than the country it now shares a symbol with. Guinness trademarked it in 1862, decades before Ireland existed as an independent state. When the new Irish Free State wanted the harp as its own emblem in 1922, it had to flip the image the other way round just to avoid clashing with the brewery's trademark. Ireland's national harp faces one direction. The one on your pint faces the other. As for the brewery itself, Arthur Guinness signed a lease on it in 1759 for nine thousand years, at £45 annually. Guinness is still brewed on that same site today.
This poster is an original illustration in watercolour and ink, painted exclusively for the Ella's Adventures travel poster series.
