Everyone comes for the mirrored halls and the glowing tilework, but the quiet marvel is the tall tower on the east side, Shams ol Emareh. Naser al-Din Shah built it in the 1860s because he had seen pictures of the tall buildings of Europe and wanted a high place to look out over Tehran. It became the tallest building in the city and the first ever built there with iron in its bones. This A6 art postcard marks Golestan Palace, Tehran.

Part of the Postcards Home series: a growing collection of original illustrated postcards, each rooted in a real place, ready to write and send.
