Each poster comes with a letter home. Ella writes about the place and its hidden history, and the details that never makes it into the guidebooks.
Built in 1680 at the height of Exeter's wool trade boom, the Custom House on Exeter's Quayside was the first building in England purpose-built for that role, home to the officials who regulated everything passing through the port. Inside, they kept something folkore called the King's Pipe, a chimney built for one job only, burning contraband tobacco seized from smugglers working the Exe estuary, a small architectural detail built entirely around catching people out.
This poster is an original illustration in watercolour and ink, painted exclusively for the Ella's Adventures travel poster series.
No frame included.
