For centuries, historians believed Exeter Cathedral had been built without a crypt, on the assumption that its sandy, marshy ground simply couldn't support one. Recent excavations proved that belief wrong. Archaeologists uncovered a hidden medieval crypt beneath the cathedral floor, one nobody alive knew existed, thought to hold the tomb of a nephew of William the Conqueror. It had sat there, unnoticed, for the better part of nine hundred years.
