Listen for the gun at one o'clock, then look east to Calton Hill, because the signal that truly mattered was the zinc ball dropped from the Nelson Monument from 1852, a mark for ships down in Leith to set their chronometers by. The castle gun was only added in 1861 for the days the fog swallowed the ball, and sailors still had to subtract the ten seconds the sound took to reach them.
