St John's Fortress has guarded this harbour mouth since the 1300s, but the cleverest piece of defence never shows up in a photograph. Every night, the people of Dubrovnik used to haul a heavy iron chain across the water, from the fortress to the Kase jetty on the other side, sealing the whole port shut against pirates and enemy ships. They walled up the entrances to the old Arsenal too, just to be sure. None of it stopped a single tourist from wandering in since, only the ships that weren't welcome.
