Dartmoor, Devon · Travel Poster

Not just a view, the heritage behind it. Ella writes about the place, its hidden history, and the details that never make it into the guidebooks, all printed on the poster.

Dartmoor's granite tors began forming roughly 280 million years ago, as molten rock cooled deep underground and cracked into blocks along vertical joints. It took millions of years of frost and weathering to strip away the softer rock around them, leaving over 160 of these stacked boulder crowns scattered across the moor, each with its own name and its own legends attached.

The ponies have been just as much a part of this landscape, roaming Dartmoor since around 1500 BC. For centuries they worked as much as they wandered, hauling granite carts along the moor's old tramways down to the canals and out to ships bound for London. These days they mostly graze wild among the tors, hardy enough to see out a Dartmoor winter that would finish off almost anything else.
