On the crown of a hill just south of the A30, where Devon gives way to Cornwall, stands a copse of around 140 beech trees. Officially they are Cookworthy Knapp, though hardly anyone calls them that. To the thousands who watch for them on the long drive west they are simply the Nearly Home Or Nearly There Trees, and the moment they appear on the skyline the kettle feels almost within reach.
