Each poster comes with a letter home. Ella writes about the place and its hidden history, and the details that never makes it into the guidebooks.
Choquequirao is often called Machu Picchu's sister city, built around the same period and roughly three times its size, yet still only around forty per cent excavated. The rest remains buried beneath jungle nobody has cleared. Where Machu Picchu receives up to 2,500 visitors a day, easily reached by train and bus, Choquequirao sees around a dozen, reachable only by a multi-day trek. It even played a quiet role in Machu Picchu's own discovery, a 1909 mapping trip to Choquequirao is what first drew Hiram Bingham back to Peru in 1911, on the journey that led him to Machu Picchu instead.
This poster is an original illustration in watercolour and ink, painted exclusively for the Ella's Adventures travel poster series.
