Burano, Venice · Travel Poster

Those famous rainbow houses along Burano's canals weren't painted for the postcards. The lagoon fog here could be thick enough that fishermen rowing home couldn't make out their own front door, so families picked a colour and stuck to it, a bright, private landmark visible long before the details of the building itself. The tradition stuck so firmly that it's now protected by law. Want to repaint your house on Burano? You have to submit your chosen colour to the local authority first, who will tell you whether it's allowed.
