Budapest's Parliament Building stands on the banks of the Danube like a dream made of limestone and spires. Built at the height of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, when Budapest was still finding its identity as the grand capital of half a continent, it remains one of Europe's most striking examples of Gothic Revival architecture. The building rises from the river in a blur of turrets and arches, asymmetrical and overwhelming, a monument to ambition that somehow manages not to topple under its own weight.
