The word every stock exchange in the world still uses, bourse, börse, borsa, bolsa, comes from a canal-side inn right here in Bruges. The Van der Beurze family ran it from 1285, and their coat of arms showed three purses, buerzen in Flemish. Merchants gathered there to trade, and staff fluent in half of Europe's languages kept the deals moving. When an innkeeper died in 1351 with clients' money still tied up in his estate, it caused a scandal that rattled Bruges' reputation for years. The building's long gone. The word never left.
