Built around 1600 to link the Doge's Palace interrogation rooms directly to the New Prison, this little covered bridge earned its famous name two centuries later, from Lord Byron, who imagined condemned prisoners sighing as they caught one last glimpse of Venice through its tiny stone windows before vanishing into a cell they might never leave. It was never a place for romance. Today, of course, it's the opposite: couples queue up to kiss in a gondola beneath it, on the promise that doing so at sunset guarantees love that lasts forever.
