Bamberg's Old Town Hall sits on its own artificial island in the middle of the river, joined to both banks by bridges, and legend says it only exists there because the local bishop refused to give the townspeople any land at all to build on. So they drove hundreds of oak piles into the riverbed and built their own island instead, filled with gravel, sand and earth, land he had no claim over. First mentioned in 1386, burned down in 1460 and rebuilt the following year, it's one of the most photographed buildings in Bavaria, and it exists entirely because somebody refused to take no for an answer.
