The waterfall that might save you, or might not

At the western edge of the moor, Lydford Gorge hides the tallest waterfall in South West England. The White Lady Waterfall drops 28 metres into the pool below, a cascade that's been forming since roughly 450,000 years ago, long before anyone was around to name it.

The name comes from a ghost said to appear to anyone in danger of drowning in the pool, though nobody quite agrees on her intentions: some say she comes to pull you to safety, others that she only shows up once it's too late. Further along the gorge, the river narrows into the Devil's Cauldron, a whirlpool that's been grinding its way through solid granite for centuries.

I painted Dartmoor in watercolour and ink, that wide open granite moorland with a Dartmoor pony watching the visitors. There's a poster with a letter home and a postcard if you'd like one.
