The bridge that's colour coded to Parliament

Here's a detail I only found out recently and now can't stop noticing. Westminster Bridge is green. Properly, deliberately green, matching the leather benches of the House of Commons, which sits on the nearest side of the Palace of Westminster.

Walk a little way downstream to Lambeth Bridge and it's a different story entirely. That one's red, matching the House of Lords benches on that side of the building instead. It's been like that since 1970, a quiet little colour code running along the Thames that most people crossing either bridge never clock at all.

I painted Westminster Bridge in watercolour and ink, that famous view towards the clock tower. There's a poster with a letter home and a postcard if you'd like one.
