A Committee of Three Hundred, one member for every metre of the tower's height, petitioned against what they called a \"useless and monstrous\" addition to the skyline. Gustave Eiffel's iron lattice went up anyway, rising above the Champ de Mars for the Exposition Universelle and becoming, almost overnight, the tallest man-made structure in the world.
