Narrow enough, in fact, that only the old 1930s Remodelado trams can still fit through them. There's an identical set of columns on the Scottish island of Staffa, part of the very same ancient lava flow, which is probably exactly how the story got started in the first place. The Americans gave it to Iceland in 1930, fifteen years before construction on the church even began, to mark a thousand years since Iceland's parliament first met. The church itself took forty one years to build, its stepped concrete wings modelled on Iceland's basalt columns, and the architect who designed it died in 1950 having only ever seen the crypt finished. Aubert, sensibly enough, decided he had imagined it and did nothing. Michael came back a second time. Still nothing. On the third visit, out of patience, the archangel pressed a burning finger to the sleeping bishop's head and left a neat hole in his skull. That, apparently, settled it. The strangest part is that you can still go and look: the skull, hole and all, is kept as a relic in the Saint-Gervais basilica in Avranches to this day. The real puzzle is the smaller inner ring, the so-called bluestones. Those came from the Preseli Hills in Pembrokeshire, in Wales, roughly 150 miles to the west. Neolithic people quarried them and somehow moved them all that way, each one weighing a few tonnes, around five thousand years ago, and nobody has ever worked out how. It remains the single greatest open question in British prehistory. There is a lovely footnote too. In the 1130s the chronicler Geoffrey of Monmouth wrote that the wizard Merlin had magically carried the stones to Salisbury Plain from the far west of Britain. For centuries that was dismissed as pure fantasy. Then, not long ago, archaeologists digging at Waun Mawn in the Preseli Hills found the remains of an older stone circle, dismantled and gone, its stones apparently taken away. An old legend of stones moved from the west, and a real emptied circle in exactly the right place. He put his foot down instead of stopping, and jumped the gap, landing safely on the far bascule before it lifted too high to reach. All twenty passengers made it across. Gunter broke his leg and was given a reward for his nerve. It's the thirteen ton bell inside it, and the tower itself only picked up the name by mistake, so thoroughly that it was formally renamed the Elizabeth Tower in 2012 and almost nobody noticed or cared. The bell has its own scar too. It cracked in 1859, just months after it first rang, and rather than replace it, engineers gave it a quarter turn and a lighter hammer so an undamaged patch took the strikes instead. It's never been repaired. The address they queue for is Singel 7, a sliver of a facade barely a metre across, and it does look impossibly thin. The catch is that it is not really a house at all, just the back end of an ordinary one whose proper front door sits comfortably wide around the corner. It became famous by accident and has been quietly fooling visitors ever since. The house that actually holds the record is a modest little thing at Oude Hoogstraat 22, all of 2.02 metres across and five metres deep, now home to what may be the tiniest tea shop in the city. Both are children of the same seventeenth century tax, when Amsterdam charged you by the width of your canal frontage, so the clever and the thrifty built mean little fronts and long deep bodies, hiding whole rooms behind a narrow face. Louis XIV built his palace on drained marshland with no river nearby, then filled the gardens with more than fifty fountains and hundreds of jets, and there was never enough water to run them all at once. Not even close. So the court invented a beautiful piece of theatre. As the king strolled the gardens, a team of fountaineers, most of them from the Francine family who ran the waterworks for generations, hid in the bushes with whistles. A courtier walking ahead would give a signal, and the men would rush to open each fountain just as Louis reached it, then shut it off the moment he had passed so the water could be saved for the next one along. The Sun King spent his whole life believing his fountains all played together in one endless spectacle. They never did. He was simply followed, everywhere he went, by a wave of water switched on seconds before he arrived.
