Founded in 1579, the walled complex housed over 300 women behind four metre walls, with its own streets named after Spanish cities, its own squares, ovens, cisterns and cemetery, a self-contained world of white arches and terracotta courtyards hidden from public view. The Inca emperor Pachacutec laid out the ancient capital so that the fortress of Sacsayhuamán formed the animal's head, the rivers Tullumayo and Huatanay shaped its body, and the point where they meet, Pumaqchupan, formed its tail. The puma was sacred to the Incas, a symbol of strength and protection, and the whole city was built as a piece of cosmic order made from streets and stone. You cannot see the shape from the ground. The Incas abandoned the city shortly before Spanish conquistadors reached the Cusco region in the 1530s, and by most accounts it was never entirely forgotten afterwards. When the explorer Hiram Bingham arrived in 1911, three farming families were already living there, and other visitors, including local landowners, had recorded seeing the ruins decades earlier. Bingham wasn't even looking for Machu Picchu.
