Its minaret was supposedly crowned with three golden spheres, though nobody agrees on whether they were ever really gold, or whether that's just another story told in the souks. During the Crimean War in the 1850s, British merchants found their usual markets in the Baltic and Russia blocked, so they redirected huge shipments of gunpowder green tea to Essaouira and Tangier instead. Moroccans already had a strong mint tradition, and the two combined into the ritual known today.
