They stayed completely unknown to the wider world until the 1930s, when commercial pilots flying over the region were the first people in two thousand years to actually see what had been drawn there. Long before it became a backpacker stop, it was something quieter, a private retreat for Lima's wealthy, whose lagoon waters were believed to have healing powers roughly sixty years ago.
