The largest city no road has ever reached

Here's the Peruvian Amazon fact: Iquitos, the gateway city into this part of the jungle, is the largest city anywhere in the world with no road connecting it to the outside. Nearly half a million people live there, completely surrounded by rainforest and river, and the only way in or out is by boat or by plane.

That isolation never stopped money finding its way in. During the rubber boom of the nineteenth century, European fortunes poured into Iquitos, and one of the more unlikely results still stands today, the Iron House, a prefabricated building designed and shipped in from Gustave Eiffel's own Paris workshop, assembled piece by piece in a city that no car has ever driven into, before or since.

I painted the Amazon in watercolour and ink, that dense green river landscape and the ice cold waterfall cascading through the centre. There's a poster with a letter home and a postcard if you'd like one.
