Launceston, Cornwall: One of the County's Most Overlooked Towns

Launceston sits on a hill above the Tamar Valley like it has been there forever, because it has. It is one of Cornwall's oldest towns, with a Norman castle at its crown and steep streets that wind down in every direction. The moment you arrive, you understand why it was once the county's capital. There is a quiet authority about it that you do not find in the busier coastal towns.

Most visitors to Cornwall head straight for the coast, and honestly, you cannot blame them. But Launceston rewards the ones who take a slight detour inland. The town has a genuinely lovely historic centre, with architecture that tells you it has been important for a long time. Broad streets, solid granite buildings, and little details everywhere if you are the sort of person who walks slowly and looks up.

The castle is the obvious centrepiece. Launceston Castle is a Norman motte-and-bailey, and it sits at the very top of the hill in a way that makes it visible from all over town. The ruins are well preserved, the views from the top are sweeping, and there is something wonderfully atmospheric about standing there on a grey Cornish morning. It does not try to compete with the grand castles further into England. It is just itself, solid and ancient, looking out over the Tamar Valley towards Devon.

For the artwork, I kept coming back to the castle keep against the sky. There is a particular quality of light in this part of Cornwall, especially when clouds are moving through, that gives everything a slightly painterly quality anyway. I worked with muted blues, warm stone tones, and a soft horizon to try to capture that feeling of stillness and age. I wanted the print to feel like an invitation to visit, not just a record of having been.

Launceston is the sort of place that sticks with you quietly. It does not shout. But once you have been, you find yourself recommending it to people with a particular enthusiasm, because you feel like you are sharing something that not enough people know about.

The Launceston print is available in the shop now with the postcards for this location too, a lovely option if you have a connection to this part of Cornwall and want to send something a little different.

Have you been to Launceston? I would love to hear what you thought of it in the comments below.
