Five thousand seats to European champions
When Sandy Park opened in July 2006, it held just 5,000 seats, built for a Championship-chasing Exeter Chiefs and designed to earn its keep as an events centre when there was no rugby on. Ten years later, the Chiefs had gone from England's second tier to Premiership and European champions.
The ground grew right alongside them, now holding 15,600, and it's gone on to host Rugby World Cup matches for both the men's and women's tournaments, the 2025 women's games setting a new record crowd for the venue. I painted Sandy Park in watercolour, the home ground that grew up with its team, right here in Devon.
